Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.
Alfred Tennyson, In Memoriam
[I can’t help but think that Tennyson never loved and lost. Because the ignorance of never having loved is far less painful than losing someone you’ve loved.]

That character in Hitch agrees with Tennyson. Have you ever watched that movie? :P

I disagree— because of how much you grow as a person and learn about yourself. If you’re looking only at pain, sure. But you have to look at more than just that. You’re not the same as you were before the love was there.

Actually, that quote is from “In Memoriam,” which is about the death of Tennyson’s best friend who died tragically in his 20s. Tennyson spent 17 years working on the poem to mourn his passing. It’s a quote about friendship, not romantic love.
