My generation doesn't read anything of substance. What's your take on fanfiction? Is reading something better than reading nothing at all?

I have often stated on this Tumblr that reading anything is better than nothing. However, it does frustrate me that too many people read garbage (e.g. Twilight, Fifty Shades of Grey, etc.) When I say “garbage” I don’t mean a work’s content—vampires, erotic, etc.—I mean the pathetically written nature of the work. Thus, my own created paradox. Read!

A lot of teachers feel that these books are a great start to get students back into reading. Let’s all just hope that they eventually pick more substantial literature! I just started reading As I Lay Dying, it’s beautiful but difficult at times.

True. Read Anais Nin, if you want to read exquisite erotic fiction. Make use of your computer and read public domain books online.
