When You Go To A Second-Hand Bookstore What Do You Like To See Inside The Store?

Help me out here, I’m trying to think of ideas for my upcoming bookstore. List things like certain books, decor, chairs, over all look of the store, etc.

Thank You!

  1. blueh20blue answered: The personality of the owner as seen in the art, furniture, paint color. When I walk in, I want a sense of who’s running the place.
  2. critiquethegeek answered: Nice tidy shelves, cute little signs with quotes or isle labels, fun lighting, chairs by the window.. oh and stacks of comic books! ^^
  3. oddstilllife answered: Honestly? Books. Books. Every kind of book. More books than should fit into the space. Every book in the universe.
  4. exoticadoration answered: It needs to be crowded, for that cozy antique feeling. With a few lamps, but not too much light, just enough. And an old, cozy chair, or 2.
  5. justanotherayesha answered: Light
  6. eibeibei answered: First of course, the books. Then for scribbles or some note from the previous owner.
  7. lookitcookit answered: definitely somewhere to sit
  8. yameiway answered: COMFY SEATING!!
  9. appreciatingnature answered: A special area for extra-cheap books, lots of classics, artwork, and of course places to sit and browse! And stationery.
  10. davidjwest said: Cats? meh
  11. thecandidcrow answered: Old stuff. Art. Sculptures. Slightly messy.
  12. rand0mglory answered: i imagine musty and brown interior…
  13. ohmyfairforest answered: I like it when a bookstore is a bit like a maze.. Just so you don’t know which shelf you’re going to run in to around the corner.
  14. excessivebookshelf answered: a cat. preferably one snoozing on top of stacks of books :)
  15. tilting-at-muses answered: Lots of comfortable chairs and little nooks and crannies among the shelves.
  16. galapagosgal answered: comfy chairs to sit and read, shelves that are not too high to see what’s on top, well lit but not too bright.
  17. smilecrylaugh answered: vintage looking furniture!!!
  18. bookconservator answered: A cat! A cat is a sign of a great bookstore
  19. mabith answered: Chairs scattered about, lots of signs pointing to the sections, history divided into periods, separate section for books printed before 1930.
  20. tendrilsoflife answered: cloth bags, to take home particularly large stacks of books! It’s always good to be eco friendly.
  21. pineyhollow answered: A separate horror section! I hate seeing SF, Fantasy, and sometimes Mystery all shelved together.
  22. guerrillamamamedicine answered: comfy chairs, airiness, beautiful books on display, a basket of free books, community events posted, help wanted sign
  23. themastermarauder answered: Second hand stores are where I go to get my fantasy books, and I often find the genre very much neglected.
  24. bagginswatson answered: Those nice old persian rugs on the floor are cool…
  25. micahclemens answered: I’m a huge fan of the shallow, simple wood bookshelves they have at City Lights in SF.
  26. davidjwest answered: I like seeing a case of the rare books upfront, and a comfortable chair here and there (if there is room).
  27. freedomslippers answered: Armchairs, definitely, paired or not. Reading lamps are nice in the absence of windows. Well marked sections are a plus.
  28. bloodyhoney answered: A pair of armchairs near a window seems required for a bookstore, if you ask me.
  29. peemsterandhalsadick answered: Somewhere to sit! Also, decor that is related to books or authors, or quotes about books on the walls maybe.
