The leases run out on 129 B&N stores at the end of this year. Barnes and Noble will not be renewing them, the stores will shut their doors. Two in my area will be closing. Fortunately my store is not one of them, but I’m being told it is a strong possibility at the end of 2013. What was once the superstore for books is now becoming a thing of the past.
*sigh*
[addition]: Nook on the other hand will thrive, especially now that Microsoft has bought a huge chunk of it. I’m guessing Nook, since B&N and Microsoft set it up as a separate entity, will spin off and be its own company using B&N digital stock.
This is a bookstore that seems to be made almost entirely out of books — down to its dramatic front doors.

Many of you have sent me messages and have responded to my announcement of opening a bookstore. Let me qualify my announcement. First, I do not intend to open a bookstore that sells new books. My intent is to open a second-hand bookstore, with a lot of character and style. Second, I have been planning and thinking about this for several years now, so this is not a new development. Third, it will be at least three years before the doors open (probably closer to five years), this will give me a chance to navigate the bookselling landscape and see how the digital market will affect physical book sales. Fourth, location is essential, so I have several places in mind. My current location is not one them. Lastly, the internet is my friend, so the shop will be online for anyone to order books from any location.
Thanks for those of you who have sent encouraging words. Cheers!
A few reminders of Borders…
I miss Borders too! But Barnes & Noble is still out there!
The Joy of Books
used books (by sweet potato anna)
The oldest shopfront in Chiswick, it was built in18th Century & is Grade II listed. The reason for bowed shopfronts was that the glazing bars were on the outside and the puttied rebate was inside, the reverse of the usual practice. It was easy to dislodge the putty, remove the glass and steal something. This was safer, they would rarely have been fitted with ‘bottle glass’. Fosters book shop is wonderful if you love books. The interior is piled high with antiquarian books, fine bindings, children’s illustrated and first editions. The entire building is Georgian. Shame about the shop door letter box & handle. I’ve always had a fondness for Chiswick High Road, because it hadn’t been taken over by the ‘High Street’ shops., as Hammersmith & Richmond had. Sadly over the last few years ‘they’ have crept in, also every other new business to open is a Brasserie.
